The Colorado Springs police officer who was injured during a shootout that killed an El Paso County sheriff's deputy is speaking out for the first time since the incident.
"We want to thank everyone for the immense outpouring of love and support for our family," police detective Marcus Yanez wrote in a statement with his wife, Lauren. "Meanwhile, our hearts are completely broken for Micah's family. Please know we will continue to be committed to serving this beautiful community, Colorado Springs."
Yanez was shot in the groin. He was released from the hospital Monday. Deputy Sgt. Jake Abendschan, who was hit with shrapnel during the shootout, was also released late Monday.
Deputy Scott Stone remains in the hospital. He has begun physical therapy and hopefully will be out of the hospital in a few days.
The civilian shot, identified as Thomas Villanueva, is undergoing spinal surgery Thursday, which could determine if he will be paralyzed the rest of his life.
