Colorado Springs police are investigating an officer-involved death of an El Paso County jail inmate, police Lt. Howard Black said.
The inmate's name has not been released and Black declined to say how the inmate died, citing the ongoing investigation.
In a news release, Black said Colorado Springs police are investigating the death, which occurred while the inmate was in the custody of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, "in accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301."
The state law he cited requires that investigations of "an incident involving the discharge of a firearm by a peace officer that resulted in injury or death" be led by a neutral agency.
Police were called to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on Thursday. A spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office could not be reached for comment.
Once the investigation is complete, the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office will review the case, Black said.
