Colorado Springs police are at the scene Thursday afternoon of a reported bank robbery at the U.S. Bank on 1125 West Garden of the Gods Road.
Detectives and K-9 Units are searching for the robber, described only as a male in his 20s, 6 feet tall.
Police said the man entered the bank shortly after noon and claimed he had a weapon, but no one confirmed seeing one. The man then fled on foot and radio scanner traffic confirmed police are searching nearby trails.
Jackson Elementary School, less than a mile east of the U.S. Bank, was on lockdown because of police activity in the area, Colorado Springs School District 11 confirmed at 12:50 p.m. The lockdown was lifted about 1:55 p.m.
An attempted robbery occurred earlier Thursday at the Academy Bank on 2835 Briargate Boulevard at 9:55 a.m., police said.
A man described by police in his 20s, 6-foot tall, wearing a gray hoodie, black hat and sunglasses reportedly walked into the bank and tried to rob it but was scared off by a uniformed security guard, fleeing on foot.
The security guard told police he tried to follow the robber but lost sight of him southeast of the bank.
This is the sixth time the Academy Bank branch on Briargate Boulevard has been hit in 2013, the most recent robberies happened Aug. 5 and July 30.
Police believe the same man was responsible for a string of robberies since May at the Academy Bank branch on Briargate Boulevard.
