Colorado Springs police took a woman into custody Sunday, saying she appeared intoxicated and was putting a baby she was holding at risk.

According to a news release, Jamie Apodaca, 24, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault on a peace officer, a felony, and misdemeanor child abuse.

Officers found Apodaca in the 900 block of East Moreno Avenue about 7 p.m., carrying a baby in a papoose-style carrier.

Police said she appeared intoxicated, had poor balance and had fallen several times. She was uncooperative and tried to leave with the baby when officers attempted to detain her, police said.

According to police reports, Apodaca struck an officer before she was handcuffed. Police reported that another person had to take the baby away from her to keep the child from being injured.

The Department of Human Services was notified and the baby was placed with other family members, police said.
