A Colorado Springs motorcycle cop was injured in a crash while escorting Vice President Mike Pence's motorcade to the airport Saturday morning.
Andrew Holland was in serious and stable condition in the intensive care, the Police Department said. Holland has been with the department since June 2009 and has been assigned to the motorcycle unit for the past five years.
The crash happened on U.S. 24 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass near Circle Drive about 7:30 a.m., police spokesman Lt. Howard Black said.
Black said the crash was an accident, but did not release any details on how it happened.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., Pence tweeted he had called the officer's wife to check on him.
Spoke to wife of injured Colorado Springs motorcycle officer. So relieved his injuries not life-threatening. Will keep him in our prayers. https://t.co/2xLsqIEtWb— Vice President Pence (@VP) June 24, 2017
"Spoke to wife of injured Colorado Springs motorcycle officer," Pence tweeted. "So relieved his injuries not life-threatening. Will keep him in our prayers."
Pence had attended Focus on the Family's 40th anniversary celebration Friday, then visited area military bases and reportedly met privately with billionaire conservative donor Charles Koch at The Broadmoor resort.
Westbound U.S. 24, which was shut down for hours, reopened by 11:45.
Escorting the president, vice president or other high government official can be dangerous - several officers have been injured in mishaps and eight officers have died.
In July 2008, a Colorado Springs cop was injured when a van clipped his motorcycle as he tried to block traffic for Barack Obama's motorcade as he traveled back to his hotel for a fundraiser after visiting Peterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Academy.
Secret Service agents and paramedics tended to the officer, Jerry Orvin, who was not badly hurt. Obama, then the Democratic presidential candidate, spoke to Orvin, who reportedly told him, "It's all part of the job."
The first death was in 1902 when a Secret Service agent detailed to protect President Theodore Roosevelt was struck and killed by a trolley car in Lennox, Mass. The most recent was in 2012 in Jupiter, Fla. An officer died in a crash escorting Obama to a campaign rally.
