Colorado Springs Fire Department crews worked for more than an hour Monday to extricate an NBS Excavating crew member they say was trapped under a boulder near Broadmoor Bluffs Drive.
The man had considerable injuries and was listed as stable, said fire department spokeswoman Sunny Smaldino. Police said he was taken to Penrose Hospital.
A 5-by-5-foot rock rolled over the man around 12:50 p.m. as he and other crew members were digging up a broken water line at 750 Brandywine Dr., west of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, in southern Colorado Springs.
The worker had climbed into the hole to find the best way to get to the broken pipe when the rock shifted and trapped his legs and feet, police said.
