Discovery Canyon was rewarded for winning Saturday's 4A Region 3 bracket.
Maybe that no-hitter from starter McKenzie Surface helped.
The Thunder were granted the No. 4 seed for the opening of Friday's 4A softball state tournament.
Class 5A Pine Creek has a tough road in the program's first trip to the state tournament since 2006.
In 3A, Florence received the area's next highest seed at No. 10, while Pine Creek received a No. 14 and 4A Palmer Ridge received a No. 15 seed.
The Thunder, in the state tournament for the fourth time in five seasons, were pleased with the placement.
"It's great," Thunder coach Tanya Ramsay said. "You never know how it's going to come out. We had a No. 5 yesterday (Saturday). We came out with a No. 4 heading into state."
The Thunder (16-5) will face No. 13 D'Evelyn (14-8), a team they haven't seen this season. That could benefit the Thunder, especially after Surface threw a state-berth-clinching no-hitter.
"It definitely will work in our advantage that they haven't faced McKenzie," Ramsay said. "Hopefully we can play off that a little bit."
Palmer Ridge (15-7) will have its hands full against No.?2 Ponderosa (17-4), as will Pine Creek (18-4), which faces one-loss No. 3 Fossil Ridge.
"I don't want to walk in there saying we're just happy to be there," Pine Creek coach Dave Warhoe said. "Hey, we made it to state. Great. But I'd love to go in there and win a couple games and make some noise up there. But we're playing a 20-1 team."
Florence gets a second shot at a team it probably should've beaten two weeks ago -- league foe Lamar (16-4-1).
"We gave up five unearned runs with three errors in the outfield and left the bases loaded three times," Florence coach Doug Arnold said. "I think we should've beat them the first time we played them."
A loss in the state first round and teams go home. And the level goes up from what teams just saw at regionals.
"We're down to the best 16 teams in the state," Ramsay said. "Just looking at the bracket these are great teams. It's like we've been telling the team, we don't have to be the best team, we just have to be the best on that specific day."
