Dozens of residents in north Colorado Springs were crying over spilled milk Monday.

"Somebody went around last night and stole approximately 57 gallons of home-delivered milk and then dumped it in a field," Colorado Springs police Lt. Catherine Buckley said Tuesday.

"We've had reports throughout the day of milk theft," she said.

The crime was dubbed the "great milk caper" by police.

The milk, delivered by Royal Crest Dairy, was stolen between Monday night and early Tuesday morning, she said.

"We have no suspects at this time," Buckley said.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office received a report, either by a homeowner or the milk delivery driver, of the dumped milk in a field in the 700 block of Struthers Ranch Road in Gleneagle, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said.

It wasn't just milk in the field.

"The county found 57 gallons, 10 half-gallons and eggs in the field," Buckley said.

Anyone with information about the milk theft is asked to call police at 444-7000 or Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at 634-7867. Callers can remain anonymous.
