Colorado Springs brewery to be featured in craft beer TV series 'Brew'

A television crew spent the day Friday at

Colorado Springs’ Red Leg Brewery Co., filming for a new series featuring 10 breweries across the country.

Red Leg, which opened on Forge Road off Garden of the Gods Road in July, is the only Springs brewery featured in the series, said owner Todd Baldwin.

Producers of the show, called “Brew,” were intrigued by Red Leg’s story, Baldwin said. Baldwin, a post 9/11 U.S. Army veteran, had the idea of a brewery that would cater to the service members and veterans in Colorado Springs.

“The word had gone up the grapevine that we cater to veterans,” Baldwin said. “They came down and wanted to know what it takes to get up and running.” Hear Baldwin tell his story.

It took a lot of knocking on bank doors, Baldwin said. He presented his business plan to dozens of banks. No one would take a chance on him, he said, until The Pikes Peak National Bank, which specializes in small business loans.

Red Leg Brewing, named for the red pants worn by artillery soldiers during the Civil War, has a personal mission of serving those who serve, Baldwin said. All of the beers are named with military in mind – like Sgt. Pils, Do Little IPA and Devil Dog Stout — and Baldwin’s head brewer Jeff Lockhart tries to release a new beer every Friday.

Red Leg Brewery is 10-barrel two-vessel system that can produce about 1,200 gallons of beer. And, February is stout month and Red Leg is releasing stouts like Irish Dry Stout, with a nice bitter beginning and creamy finish, each Friday.

Baldwin said he’s not sure when the 10-part “Brew” series will air. But, he’ll keep Sud Sisters posted, he said.
