Erin Lynn Sokol, a Colorado Springs attorney, was appointed to fill a vacancy on the 4th Judicial District bench, the Office of Gov. John Hickenlooper announced Wednesday.

Sokol's appointment is effective Aug. 1, after longtime District Judge Gilbert Martinez retires.

Martinez, chief judge and a nearly 30-year veteran of the local bench, announced his retirement in March. District Judge William Bain was selected to succeed him as chief judge.

El Paso and Teller counties make up the 4th Judicial District.

Sokol has been a senior attorney at Hogan Lovells US, LLP in Colorado Springs since August 2014. She was a partner at Sokol & Brewer in Colorado Springs from 2007 to 2014, associate at Mulliken Weiner Karsh Berg & Jolivet, P.C. in Colorado Springs from 2004 to 2007, an associate at Hogan & Hartson LLP in Colorado Springs from 2000 to 2004 and an associate at Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C., from 1999 to 2000.

She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1996 and Georgetown University Law Center in 1999.
