The Colorado Springs Airport has been awarded a $10.5 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to continue work on taxiways near its passenger terminal.

Broomfield-based Flatiron Construction Corp. is expected to start work on the project in August and complete the first phase in October, begin the second phase in April and complete it in July, said Chris Touch, the airport's interim design and construction manager.

The taxiways that will be rebuilt were first constructed when the passenger terminal was completed in 1994.

The first segment of taxiway work funded by a previous grant began in September and will be completed next week. The airport also will seek a grant next year to pay for continuing work later in 2019, Touch said.

The $10.5 million allotment is part of $3.18 billion in grants awarded to more than 200 projects nationwide, including $22.8 million for projects at Denver International Airport, Grand Junction Regional Airport and Yampa Valley Regional Airport.
