AURORA — A jury has convicted a suburban Denver man of beating his 84-year-old grandfather to death during an argument that started over the preparation of shrimp.

The Aurora Sentinel reported that 34-year-old Jason Vanbommel was convicted of several charges, including reckless manslaughter and assault.

Prosecutors say he started arguing with his grandmother in December 2015 over the shrimp she planned to prepare. When the grandfather, Frans Vanbommel, told his grandson to be respectful, the younger Vanbommel punched him in the head and kicked him in the ribs.

The grandfather died at a hospital a few days later.

Jason Vanbommel is scheduled to be sentenced as a habitual criminal June 16.
