Gazette Premium Content Colorado health department urges parents to get school children immunized now

By Debbie Kelley Published: July 29, 2013

Getting a shot in the arm is no fun, but immunizations are required in Colorado for students to attend school.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is asking parents to make appointments for immunizations now. Specific immunizations are required for children entering childcare, preschool, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and for children in other grades enrolling in a Colorado school for the first time. Booster shots also are needed for older children.

Vaccines prevent such diseases as measles, mumps, chickenpox, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis and more. For a list of required immunizations, go to immunizeforgood.com. Questions about school policies on when or how immunization certificates must be provided should be directed to the schools.

Immunizations also are required for full-time college students in Colorado, including for preventing the sometimes fatal meningococcal disease.

Under the Affordable Care Act, childhood immunizations required for school attendance are typically fully covered by private insurance policies.

El Paso County Public Health, 1675 W. Garden of the Gods Road, Suite 2044, provides immunizations. Call 578-3199 for an appointment. The health department charges for vaccines, but children may be eligible for free vaccinations under the Vaccines for Children program. Check eligibility at coloradoimmunizations.com.

To make an appointment at Teller County Public Health, call 687-6416. The office at 11115 W. Highway 24, Unit 2C, in Divide, gives immunizations Wednesday afternoons.
