Colorado gas regulators to drop fracking lawsuit

The Associated Press Published: August 6, 2014

DENVER — Colorado oil and gas regulators are expected to dismiss a lawsuit against the city of Longmont for its vote against hydraulic fracturing.

The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission is expected to vote in a closed-door session Thursday to grant Gov. John Hickenlooper's request to drop the lawsuit. The state sued Longmont after it voted in 2012 to ban fracking in city limits.

Dropping the lawsuit was part of a deal Hickenlooper worked out to persuade fracking opponents to withdraw two ballot measures that could have hampered the oil and gas industry.

The COGCC lawsuit against Longmont was the first time the state had ever directly sued a community over oil and gas rules.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Association is still suing Longmont over its fracking ban.
