Second-seeded Colorado College will play for a national collegiate club rugby 7s championship this weekend in Pittsburgh.
The CC women qualified for the National Small College Rugby Organization’s 16-team tournament Saturday and Sunday at Founders Field for the second straight year by winning its region. The Tigers were the national runners-up last season.
The 5-0 Tigers cruised to nationals by outscoring club teams from Adams State, Chadron State, Denver, Regis and Western State by a combined 141-17 margin.
CC is led by 2016 NSCRO all-star honoree Nora Holmes and senior captain Emilia Delgado, who was named as the regional’s Most Valuable Player. The team relies on a balanced offensive attack, thanks to having 56 players in the program, coach Mike Windle said.
“It’s really a team effort,” Windle said. “No one player scored more than a few tries in any one match.”
CC takes on Findlay (Ohio) in pool play at 8:20 a.m. Mountain on Saturday followed by Albright (Pa.) at 10 a.m. and Claremont (Calif.) at 11:40 a.m. Crossover play starts that afternoon with the championship at 11 a.m. Sunday.
