Paul K. Maruyama, a lecturer in Japanese at Colorado College and president of the Japan America Society of Southern Colorado, has been named a recipient of the Japanese imperial decoration, 'The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. '

Ikuhiko Ono, the consulate general of Japan in Denver, said Maruyama has contributed to the promotion of mutual understanding between the two countries through teaching, both as a teacher of Japanese and as a judo instructor. Maruyama was one of the first teachers of the Japanese language at the Air Force Academy and is the first Japanese language instructor at CC. As an athlete, he was a member of the U.S. judo team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He also was head coach of the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic judo teams.
