There’s nothing like the pop of a champagne cork to get the party started, so taking a bottle of sparkling wine to a Christmas party is always a great choice. This bottle of French bubbles from Limoux in the Languedoc is made is made in the méthode champenoise and seems more like true champagne than most of the other sparkling wines we’ve tasted. It is dry, lightly fruity with toast and mineral notes, balanced by crisp acidity and tiny, delicate bubbles. Perfect for a party, as sparkling wine goes well with a great variety of appetizers. At the amazing price of $15.99, you can take two! Salut!

Dönnhoff Riesling Qualitätswein 2015

A fun way to show up at a holiday party is with a good bottle of well-chilled Riesling from the Nahe region of Germany. The low alcohol and perfect acidity make it a wonderful starter wine for what comes later – like the fuller-bodied reds. The slightest sweetness is especially pleasing to the waiting taste buds of party goers. Light in body and very quaffable, few people could resist this as a good opening wine for the festivities ahead. Available at Coaltrain for $19.99.

Barrique Pinot Noir 2014

It’s wonderful to arrive at a party with a bottle of Pinot Noir. Lighter in body than most red wines, and generally lower in alcohol, these wines can be paired with a variety of holiday meats and cheeses, but can certainly be enjoyed simply by themselves. Best if served at cellar temperature – maybe leave it outside in the cold night air for a bit, - Pinots have a fresh, light red fruit taste to them. We love and recommend the Barrique Pinot Noir, out of Sonoma County. The 2014 is drinking beautifully now and is available for the crowd-pleasing price of just $17.99.

Le Sughere di Frassinello 2012

If you are somewhat intimidated because your hosts are wine aficionados, this is the perfect wine to bring to their party. From the Maremma region of Tuscany, Le Sughere is a delicious blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot. It is a beautiful old world style with the perfect blend of dark fruit, cedar, baking spice and tobacco components. They will love it as will the other guests who will appreciate having something different than the usual array of domestic wines. At $24.99, with 91 points from the Wine Advocate, 90 points from the Wine Spectator and 94 points from Coaltrain, you can’t go wrong!

Available at Coaltrain Wine and Spirits, 330 West Uintah Street, Colorado Springs.
