Gazette Premium Content Clinton to Aspen crowd: 'deeply disturbed' by Hobby Lobby ruling

Associated Press Updated: June 30, 2014 at 4:27 pm

ASPEN — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says she is "deeply disturbed" by the Supreme Court ruling on contraception in the Hobby Lobby case.

Speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival Monday, Clinton said she disagreed with treating a family-run company like a person with religious rights and also with denying women coverage for birth control.

Clinton mentioned how women and girls can be denied rights in other parts of the world in order to unite the rest of society but then added that the United States is still much better than many other countries when it comes women's rights.

The court's ruling was based on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which was signed into law by Bill Clinton, but she said no one ever intended the law to be used this way.
