Vert Grace Marie Vert 1922 - 2018 Grace Marie Vert, 95, died Monday, February 19, 2018 at Liberty Heights Memory Care in Colorado Springs. Grace was born on August 15, 1922 in Kasson Township, MI to Robert Daniel, Sr. and Margaret Emily Baatz. She was the eldest of eight children. She graduated from Empire High School, Class of 1940. Grace married John F. ("Jack") Vert, Sr. in December 1944 in Burbank, California while Jack was serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She returned to Kasson Township for the duration of Jack's naval service, and eventually she and Jack lived most of their married life in Roseville, MI and Traverse City, MI. In later years, they were "snowbirds," dividing their time between Williamsburg, MI and Bradenton, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005. Grace moved to Colorado Springs in July, 2008, to be with her daughter and her family. Here she enjoyed many family gatherings, numerous trips to Westcliffe, CO and annual jaunts to the Nutcracker Ballet at the Pikes Peak Center. She was an outstanding homemaker, accomplished seamstress, and an avid gardener. She had a passion for roller skating until her mid-60's when, after Jack's retirement, the two of them took up ballroom dancing. She loved nature and, in particular, her feathered friends. One of her favorite pastimes was watching hummingbirds as they danced around their feeders. Recycling was a way of life for her--long before it was fashionable--it was typical to find functional and artistic upcycled objects throughout her beautifully landscaped yards. She created lovely oil paintings and dabbled in macrame and many other crafts, fashioning colorful ceramic pieces and several pieces of jewelry during her time in assisted living communities. Those who tended to Grace in her waning years say they will miss her lovely smile, her flirty winks, and even her unfiltered honesty. One of her favorite words was "unique," and that was a fitting description of Grace herself. She will be fondly remembered. Grace is survived by two sons, John F. "Jack" (Beverly) Vert, Jr. of Troy, MI and Wayne E. (Rebecca) Vert of Siesta Key, FL; and daughter, Joyce M. (Ronald) Hess of Colorado Springs; and eight grandchildren: Dion (Amy) DeMeyer of Erie, CO; Trevor (Melissa) Vert of Ann Arbor, MI; Kenneth Vert of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI; Christian (Rebecca) DeMeyer of Colorado Springs; Aaron (Shawna) DeMeyer of San Diego, CA; Andrew (Kate) Vert of Golden, CO ; John (April) Vert of Washington, MI; and Madison Vert of New York City; along with three step grandchildren, Jeremy (Kris) Hess of Hastings, NE; Ashley Hess of Denver; and Heather Hess (fiance Wayne Gwin) of Colorado Springs. Grace had ten great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Lessard of Bellaire, MI; and Ruth "Sally" (Frank) Majszak of Benzie County, MI; two sisters-in-law, June and JoAnn Baatz; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a private memorial service for the family on March 12th at 10:00 am, followed by an open house for friends and neighbors from 11:00-1:00 at the home of Grace's daughter and son-in-law in Colorado Springs. There will be a memorial ceremony and inurnment at a separate ceremony in Traverse City, Michigan at a later date. Grace's family wishes to thank Pikes Peak Hospice and the staffs at Brookdale Vista Grande and Liberty Heights for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation.

District 49 Board of Education to Consider Filing Waiver for Substitute Teacher Policy WHO: District 49 Board of Education, District 49 administration WHAT: District 49 BOE will consider a proposal seeking a waiver to the state substitute teacher policy WHEN: Wednesday, March 28, 2018, 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Board Room, District 49 Education Service Center, 10850 E. Woodmen Road, Peyton, CO 80831 WHY: District 49 works hard to live up to our mission of being the best choice to learn, work and lead. The district regularly employs substitute teachers to provide coverage for teachers who are ill, on leave, or attending professional trainings. Candidates who seek to serve as substitute teachers have to comply with state-based licensing processes, which limits the pool of available and qualified substitute teachers. To complicate things further, despite increasing benefits and pay for substitute teachers, the market is not generating a sufficient supply of state-licensed candidates. As a result, the District frequently faces classroom overcrowding, increasing overtime costs and other related expenses when we cannot readily find people to fill-in as substitutes. In response to these conditions, District 49 will seek a waiver from the state BOE requirements to qualify and develop a pool of highly capable substitute teachers. The District will provide supporting evidence that the selection process will meet all quality and performance expectations from the state and D49. D49 intends this proposal to generate savings by limiting costs involved with recruiting from the existing pool of licensed substitute teachers, and by reducing the amount spent to cover the costs related to the current shortage of substitute teachers.
