Stark John "Ed" Edwin Stark January 7, 1929 - December 30, 2017 2 parts J.P. Wiser's Deluxe Canadian Whiskey: 1 part Sweet Vermouth. Mix over ice, stir until very cold and pour into a martini glass. Add a cherry, sip and enjoy! ~ Ed Stark's recipe for a Manhattan How do you start crafting an obituary about a man who was many things to many people? How do you tell the world about all the qualities, quirks and experiences which made up Dad's life? How do you say it in a million words or less? How do you start, knowing that once you do, the reality of never seeing your father, brother, grandfather, uncle, mentor, neighbor and friend settles in? You start with the facts. John Edwin Stark was born in La Junta, Colorado on January 7, 1929 to Francis Middleton and Mary Louise Stark. He attended Onarga Military School in Onarga, Illinois. **FUN FACT: HE GRADUATED #2 IN HIS CLASS (Of 27)** Dad went on to graduate with a business degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1951. While attending CU, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and ROTC. During college, he operated Superior Gas and Oil (a gas station conglomerate with 2 locations!) **FUN FACT: HE'D BEEN RUNNING HIS DAD'S FULL SERVICE GAS STATION IN LA JUNTA SINCE HE WAS 12 YEARS OLD** The University of Colorado is also where he met and later married his partner in crime, Mary Frances Phillips. **FUN FACT: DAD PROPOSED TO OUR MOM OVER THE PHONE FROM A DINER WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP WITH HIS FATHER** Upon graduation, he returned to La Junta, Colorado to join the family furniture business - Stark's Furniture, a business started by his grandfather in 1897. In 1969, Dad moved the family to Colorado Springs to help with the explosive growth of Starks' Colorado Springs location. After his brother Larry developed a cutting-edge computer software system to manage their retail stores, they both decided to close the furniture stores and start a software company dedicated to helping furniture retailers throughout the world. Dad was a story teller. He tempered his tales with his wicked sense of humor and attention to detail. Dad was continually complimented by the way that he smelled. He was always dressed to the nines. **FUN FACT: HE NEVER OWNED A PAIR OF JEANS** Dad also enjoyed good food and drink with family and friends. FUN FACT: AFTER IMBIBING IN ONE TOO MANY, HE CALLED THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND** He never met a dessert he didn't like. Dad enjoyed travelling the world, playing golf with his wife. **FUN FACT: DAD HAD A HOLE IN ONE IN 1979** One of the most admirable qualities was his ability to converse genuinely and confidently with anyone. He treated you like the person you were - not the job you had. Dad was community minded. He served in the National Guard, retiring as Captain. **FUN FACT: HIS NATIONAL GUARD UNIT ("WEEKEND WARRIORS") WAS CONSISTENTLY VICTORIOUS OVER OTHER GUARD UNITS AND REGULAR ARMY IN THE ANNUAL ARTILLERY COMPETITION HELD IN THE SUMMERS AT FT. CARSON** Dad served as a City Councilman member in La Junta, Colorado. **FUN FACT: YOUNGEST MEMBER ELECTED TO CITY COUNCIL OF LA JUNTA, CO (AGE 26)** Dad was a proud member of Rotary International and enjoyed attending meetings worldwide. He was a member of the Garden of the Gods Club and was Past President & board member of the Colorado Springs Country Club. Ed is survived by his son Brian (Suzzan) and granddaughter Ashley (Aaron); son Randy (Mary) and their son Ben. He is also survived by his brother Larry (Joy) and their children and grandchildren as well Shirley (Ed) Fancher of Amarillo, TX and their children and grandchildren and his many friends he made throughout all walks of life in all parts of the world. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances and sons Judson Lee and John Middleton. A Celebration of Life and reception will be held on Friday, January 19th at 3 PM. Beshears Gayle O. Beshears December 27, 1928 - January 6, 2018. At home, surrounded by his loving family, Gayle Beshears, 89, passed peacefully into the arms of his beloved wife Mary Lou. Born in Oklahoma to Frank and Theodora (Teddie) Beshears, he and his siblings Tex, Jim and Fern were taught a strong work ethic by their parents, one that propelled Gayle from his initial position as Asst. Mgr. for Circle T Meats, helping develop frozen food products for the Southland Corp. (7-Eleven) test kitchens, to running the Midwest Dairy Division and eventually serving at the helm of Reddy Ice. Although successful in his entrepreneurial ventures, it was his philanthropic endeavors of which he was most proud. In the years following his wife's death, Gayle helped underwrite the city's first digital mammography machine, aided in the creation of the Mary Lou Beshears Breast Care Center, and later contributed to the acquisition of six additional diagnostic units. Truly humble in nature, he never sought recognition for these life-saving efforts, but was honored by the American Cancer Society with the prestigious "Sword of Hope" award at a black-tie gala at The Broadmoor in 2012 and previously cited as Colorado Springs "Individual Philanthropist of the Year" in 2010. Volunteering his time and talents, Gayle proudly served on the Board of Directors for Discover Goodwill, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Memorial Hospital Foundation, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services Foundation and the Cheyenne Mtn. Country Club, among others. Affectionately known as "The Ice Man" by some or "Mr. B" to others, he will long be remembered as the consummate southern gentleman. Equally at ease in his lilac silk dinner jacket as he was in his cowboy hat and boots, he loved hopping in his car with his sidekick "Dak" and visiting friends throughout the city, making each feel special - because in Gayle's heart they were. Gayle was predeceased in death by his parents, brother Jim, sister Fern, granddaughter Darla and beloved wife Mary Lou. He is survived by his brother Tex and wife Lynn, son Charles Howard and Betsy Lind, daughter Linda and husband Dee Kingsbury; grandchildren Barbara and husband Patrick Hines, Dennis and wife Shannon Kingsbury, and Brian and wife Lily Kingsbury; great-grandchildren Marcus, Rachel and Matthew Miller and Evan, Dilan and Ruth Kingsbury, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to UCHealth Memorial Hospital Foundation in support of the UCHealth Mary Lou Beshears Breast Care Center by mailing contributions to 175 S. Union Blvd, Suite 240, Colorado Springs, CO 80910, or by calling 719-365-4483 or visiting https://thankyou4caring.org/beshears

Clayton Marjorie Norris Clayton December 23, 1920 - December 31, 2017 Marjorie Norris Clayton passed away on December 31, 2017, after a brief illness. She was born December 23, 1920, to the late Harley and Clara (Bell) Smith near Gibbon, Nebraska. She had a brother, Weston (Ann) Smith and a sister Clara Marie (Paul) Kingsley. Both siblings preceded her in death. Marjorie graduated from Kearney High School in Kearney, Nebraska. Shortly afterward in 1938, she married her husband, Kenneth Jay Norris and moved to Colorado Springs, CO. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage until he passed away in 1984. Marjorie retired from Sears as a secretary to take care of her husband during his illness. They had four children: Jayne (Doug) Worthington, Judy (Dennis) Friesth, Vicki (Frank) Anselmo, and Kenneth Jay (Jill) Norris Jr. Marjorie married Robert G. Clayton in 1986, and they enjoyed 22 years of marriage until his death in 2008. Marjorie considered herself lucky to be married to two wonderful men and to "inherit" a stepson, Larry (Monica) Clayton and a stepdaughter Sherry (Richard) Walker. Marjorie enjoyed traveling, bowling, dancing, and reading. She loved to go out to lunch and on shopping trips. Her most recent goal was to celebrate her 97th birthday. Her daughters and granddaughters celebrated with her in her hospice room with balloons and cupcakes on the 23rd of December. She made it! Marjorie had nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and seven step great-grandchildren with one on the way. She was very proud of her family, and her favorite quote was, "I am the one that started all this mess!" She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jayne Worthington, and her grandson, Anthony Anselmo. A private graveside service will be held in Kearney, Nebraska at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made in Marjorie's name to Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80906.

Ettenhofer John Robert Ettenhofer November 14, 1944 January 4, 2018 John Robert Ettenhofer of Colorado Springs died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 at the age of 73. He had suffered for several years from Parkinsonism and accompanying dementia. He was born Nov. 14, 1944, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Robert and Margaret Ettenhofer. He attended local public schools there, then headed to college at Ohio State University, where he also graduated from law school. That began his lifelong love of and support for the Ohio State Buckeyes, a passion he shared with his grandfather, John Andrews of Hamilton. Even after moving to Colorado following law school, for many years he traveled back to Columbus to root for his favorite football team. He also enjoyed attending Air Force football, basketball, and hockey games. His love of sports extended to baseball; he was a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds and later enjoyed the Colorado Rockies. Upon moving to Colorado in 1970, he began a career as a commercial title examiner, eventually becoming well-respected in Colorado Springs for his thorough work and industry knowledge spanning three decades. He eventually retired from a vice president position at Stewart Title in 2012 and later consulted with Land Title on special projects. Throughout his life he maintained his friendships with several high school friends living in various states, which brought him great pleasure. He also maintained a love of trains, including model trains, and rode the rails when he could. And he traveled, sometimes on mission trips with First Presbyterian Church, but mostly for personal enjoyment. He was a big fan of taking his sons on road trips to U.S. historical sites and national parks. A source of pride was having visited all 50 state capitals. He also went to China and several European destinations. He is survived by two sons, Jeff (Maria Culcasi) of Richmond, Calif., and beloved grandson Henry Culcasi; Andrew (Nicole) of Chicago; and a sister Judy (Gilbert Williams) of Spring Green, Wis. He is also survived by his former wife, Kendra Henry. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thusday, Jan. 18, at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, Colo. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Jan. 19, at First Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs. Burial will be at his family gravesite in Hamilton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association. The family would like to thank Pikes Peak Hospice and the staff at the Healthcare Resort for caring for John in his final years. In addition, special gratitude goes to his First Presbyterian Church network, as well as his many loyal friends who visited him.
