Shelby Shirley Jean Shelby June 23, 1940 - February 15, 2018 Shirley Jean (Freeman) Shelby, 77, was surrounded by her children and husband when she passed away peacefully after a long struggle with respiratory illness at her home in Arizona. She was born to Benjamin and Hattie Freeman on June 23, 1940 and was proud to call the south side of Chicago her childhood home. Dedicated to her studies at Holy Angels Catholic School and Wendell Phillips High School, Shirley was offered a full scholarship from Illinois State University, but instead began a lifelong journey with the marriage to her high school sweetheart, Robert J. Shelby Jr. They moved to Colorado 45 years ago, when Robert was assigned to the United States Air Force Academy. Medical reasons required her to seek a lower elevation so they moved to Arizona in 2016. Shirley was employed with federal civil service and the El Paso County Treasurer's Office as an accountant. Additionally, she was a successful realtor before retiring in 2002. A devout Catholic, Shirley ministered Holy Communion and made rosaries for the sick, homebound, and prison inmates. An avid Broncos fan, she looked forward to football season every year. Shirley enjoyed fishing, gardening, crocheting, quilting, and putting together jigsaw puzzles. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Benjamin and Hattie Freeman; and is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Robert III, Cynthia (Christopher) and Karen (Robert); grandchildren, Joshua and Shelby Pylkka, Ashlee, Zachary and Nicholas Donels; siblings, Dorothy, Judith, Janice, Antoinette, Benjamin; and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation and Vigil will be at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Boulevard, Friday, February 23rd from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with Rosary to follow from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church, 11020 Teachout Road, Black Forest, CO., 80908, Saturday, February 24th at 10:00 a.m.

Holst Dale L. Holst 1929 - 2018 Dale L. Holst born October 21, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, IA died February 18, 2018 peacefully in his apartment at Brookdale Senior Living, Sheridan, WY. Preceded in death by his first wife Wilma Jaqueline Holst, brother Halstead Holst, and son Patrick Holst. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia, brother Jack Holst of Colorado Springs, CO, brother Stanley Holst of Dresden TN, son Michael Holst of Wheatland, WY, stepson Ray Caesar of Newell, OK, daughter Susan B. Ward of Lake Charles, LA, son Dr. Stephen Holst of Sheridan, WY, daughter Linda Wilson of Waynesville, NC. He graduated from U of Iowa in 1950, Denver College of Law in 1955. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as an Infantry Platoon Leader earning a Combat Infantry Badge and Korean War Service Medal. He practiced law in Colorado for 50 years in Colorado Springs until his retirement in 2006. He continued to practice law with volunteer work in Coeur d Alene, ID. He was a life member of the El Paso County Bar Association (past President), the Colorado Springs Rotary Club (past President). He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills LCMS in Rathdrum, ID. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Martin Luther Grammar School, through Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1300 W. 5th Street, Sheridan, WY 82801. District 49 Board of Education to Consider Filing Waiver for Substitute Teacher Policy WHO: District 49 Board of Education, District 49 administration WHAT: District 49 BOE will consider a proposal seeking a waiver to the state substitute teacher policy WHEN: Wednesday, March 28, 2018, 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Board Room, District 49 Education Service Center, 10850 E. Woodmen Road, Peyton, CO 80831 WHY: District 49 works hard to live up to our mission of being the best choice to learn, work and lead. The district regularly employs substitute teachers to provide coverage for teachers who are ill, on leave, or attending professional trainings. Candidates who seek to serve as substitute teachers have to comply with state-based licensing processes, which limits the pool of available and qualified substitute teachers. To complicate things further, despite increasing benefits and pay for substitute teachers, the market is not generating a sufficient supply of state-licensed candidates. As a result, the District frequently faces classroom overcrowding, increasing overtime costs and other related expenses when we cannot readily find people to fill-in as substitutes. In response to these conditions, District 49 will seek a waiver from the state BOE requirements to qualify and develop a pool of highly capable substitute teachers. The District will provide supporting evidence that the selection process will meet all quality and performance expectations from the state and D49. D49 intends this proposal to generate savings by limiting costs involved with recruiting from the existing pool of licensed substitute teachers, and by reducing the amount spent to cover the costs related to the current shortage of substitute teachers.
