Archer Jean W. Archer 1935 - 2018 Jean W. Archer, 82 years old, passed away on February 7, 2018. She was a resident of Manitou Springs, Colorado from 1991 to 2015. Then she resided at Brookdale at Skyline in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 2015 to 2017. Her final residence was Sunny Vista Living Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jean was born during the depression era in 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri , to Henry and Virginia Wurst. She resided in Kansas City until she attended college in Colorado. Jean was a graduate of University of Colorado - Boulder where she received her degree in Education. She also attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, where she completed her Masters in Pastoral Care. Before Jean was married, she spent a few months living in South Africa and Mozambique at a Methodist mission station, which gave her a lasting impression of what it means to live in poverty, and, yet, through faith, song and dance, keep joy in one's heart. In 1960, she married Lewis Archer in Johannesburg, South Africa. Even though Jean and Lew met in college, they agreed to experience missionary life together before getting married. Throughout their 52 year marriage (Lew died in April, 2013), they shared being drama and history buffs and attended many theater productions together. After returning to the United States, Jean taught Kindergarten and Special Education in Berkeley, CA; Madison, NJ; Oxford, GA; and Spokane, WA. Jean loved to volunteer wherever she lived. In Georgia (1966-1968), she led song and dance with Head Start during the civil rights years. During her years in Spokane, WA (1968-1991), she was the assistant volunteer coordinator for the YWCA, the chair of the city-wide rummage sale for St. George's School, and partnered with the Samaritan Center. While living in Manitou Springs, CO (1991-2015), she opened her home to be a sanctuary for day workshops, in honor of her mother. After Lew died, she volunteered at the Manitou Springs Visitor Center. After a diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome in 1998, Jean was determined to use her experience to provide support and encouragement to others. For 14 years, she was the Southern Colorado liaison for the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) Foundation, which is based in Philadelphia, PA. Jean was the director of support groups for the GBS Foundation in Colorado Springs and Grand Junction. She used her seminary degree in pastoral care to train a team of survivors (as she was), and they saw eighty people who had experienced GBS from mild to severe degrees. Jean created a holistic program of eight modalities that she offered for healing. She herself gained wisdom for life from many of these authentic loving folks. Jean was a soprano soloist and sang in choral groups much of her life. Music was intertwined into her life. Song and dance were up lifting to Jean's spirits. She sang, danced and played the piano almost every day. Jean is survived by her son, Robert Archer of Spokane, Washington; daughter, Andrea Archer of Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, H.R. Wurst of Grass Valley, California; and granddaughter, Skye Hunter-Archer of Seattle, Washington. "Let us be silent, that we may hear the whisper of God." - Ralph Waldo Emerson A celebration of Jean's life will be Saturday, February 24, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 20 E. Saint Vrain St, Colorado Springs, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to: Manitou Springs Heritage Museum 517 Manitou Ave, Manitou Springs, CO 80829

Knight Alan Thomas Knight September 1, 1953 - February 13, 2018 Alan Thomas Knight was born September 1, 1953 in the now abandoned mining town of Gilman, Colorado. Alan died February 13 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Alan attended school in Carbondale and Paonia, Colorado, graduating from Paonia in 1971. He went on to attend Fort Lewis College in Durango and graduated from Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo with a degree in Mass Communications. While attending SCSC (now the University of Southern Colorado), Alan met his wife, Rebecca Cruts, and they began more than 40 years of adventures together. Alan and Becky were married in Colorado Springs on August 2, 1975. After their marriage, they moved to the high country in Leadville, where Alan was employed at the Climax molybdenum mine as a motorman, driving trains hauling ore from underground. While there, Alan earned the nickname The Librarian for the book that he always carried in his lunch pail. This proved to be prophetic! After the mine closed, Alan and Becky returned to Colorado Springs and Alan began work for the El Paso County library district, where he was employed up until the time of his death. Alan and Becky had many adventures in their time together, travelling the US and the world. Alan had many interests: his prodigious appetite for reading, a love of Colorado history and the many cats that he and Becky raised and fostered over the years. Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Becky, and is survived by his sister, Pat Hoffman, and two brothers, Greg and Matt Knight, as well as several nieces and nephews. Donations may be made to the Pikes Peak Humane Society. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel. A reception will follow the services at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center, 975 South Union Boulevard. Online condolences: ShrineOfRemembrance.com

Davison Andrew James Davison February 22, 1973 - December 3, 2017 Andrew James Davison (aka Andy; DJ SPENT) born February 22, 1973 passed suddenly December 3, 2017 Andy is survived by his parents James and Carol and his younger brother and sister-in-law, Adam and Cait Davison. From birth to the day of his passing, Andy had a spark for life with his own view point and a determination to do it his way. Skate boarding to snowboarding, DJ'ing to graffiti art, converting a found tree stump into a one-of-a-kind custom piece of furniture, his repertoire was endless. His brilliant flame burned hot and fast; he was not a flickering candle whose light could be snuffed out in a breeze. But Andy is a shooting star whose energy is now exploring the universe he so often thought about but could only imagine. Andy's spirit will continue to live on in the home he built, the artwork he created and in the hearts and memories of all of us who loved him. Rest in peace Andy. Friends and family will be celebrating Andy's life and memories February 24, 2018 at his home in Hartsel, CO

District 49 Board of Education to Consider Filing Waiver for Substitute Teacher Policy WHO: District 49 Board of Education, District 49 administration WHAT: District 49 BOE will consider a proposal seeking a waiver to the state substitute teacher policy WHEN: Wednesday, March 28, 2018, 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Board Room, District 49 Education Service Center, 10850 E. Woodmen Road, Peyton, CO 80831 WHY: District 49 works hard to live up to our mission of being the best choice to learn, work and lead. The district regularly employs substitute teachers to provide coverage for teachers who are ill, on leave, or attending professional trainings. Candidates who seek to serve as substitute teachers have to comply with state-based licensing processes, which limits the pool of available and qualified substitute teachers. To complicate things further, despite increasing benefits and pay for substitute teachers, the market is not generating a sufficient supply of state-licensed candidates. As a result, the District frequently faces classroom overcrowding, increasing overtime costs and other related expenses when we cannot readily find people to fill-in as substitutes. In response to these conditions, District 49 will seek a waiver from the state BOE requirements to qualify and develop a pool of highly capable substitute teachers. The District will provide supporting evidence that the selection process will meet all quality and performance expectations from the state and D49. D49 intends this proposal to generate savings by limiting costs involved with recruiting from the existing pool of licensed substitute teachers, and by reducing the amount spent to cover the costs related to the current shortage of substitute teachers.
