Sister Rose Virginia was born on June 7, 1922, to Hugh L. and Florence (Paul) Brown in Sidney, Ohio. She was the seventh child of 12. She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 75 years. Sister Rose Virginia attended Holy Angels School in Sidney, Ohio and graduated from St. Mary (Hyde Park) in Cincinnati in 1940. Sister Rose Virginia was taught by Sisters of Charity for all 12 years and went to the College of Mount St. Joseph after graduation, studying medical technology. She entered the Congregation on Feb. 2, 1943, and celebrated 75 years of vowed life this past month. Sister Rose Virginia earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph (Cincinnati) in 1944 and later a master's in education from Xavier University (Cincinnati) in 1956. Sister Rose Virginia's ministries brought her to the high school classroom for her first 13 years, beginning at St. Raphael, Springfield, Ohio (1944-'45). She went to Seton, Cincinnati (1945-'48), St. Rose, Lima, Ohio (1948-'55), St. Mary, Lansing, Michigan (1955-'56), and St. James, Bay City, Michigan (1956-'57). She began a new career in 1957 as a laboratory supervisor at Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs, Colorado, putting to use the skills earned earlier at the College of Mount St. Joseph; this began a solid career in directing laboratory work spanning 55 years. All of those years were served at Penrose Hospital, except for six years at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, 1960-'66. She remained the consummate instructor of students, old and young, directing and coordinating laboratory education. She saw laboratory testing go from all being done manually to everything automated and computerized. Sister Rose Virginia offered leadership to the various organizations of which she was a part. She was a life-long member of the American Society of Medical Technology (ASMT), serving as president of the local, state and regional societies. She received the Robin H. Mendohlson Award for ASMT outstanding activity in 1987 and the 1989 national ASMT Member of the Year. In providing oversight of Penrose's medical technology program she worked with pathologists, watching the lab grow from a glass test tube, pipettes and slides to a computerized mega-mechanized assortment of high-tech equipment, full of lasers and micro plates. She often stated, "I always give my students a solid core experience in laboratory medicine; in the end it is the patient who most benefits." Sister Rose Virginia moved to the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in 2012; she moved to Mother Margaret Hall in 2014. Associate Lee Hemminger recalls, "What a gift Rose was to those of us in the West - her special hospitality, sense of humor, and love made life better with each encounter. Those of us who lived a distance from Colorado Springs could always count on a place to stay the night if it was too late to return home, and a good breakfast the next morning. I am grateful for her tremendous support and love of Associates." Sister Rose Virginia is survived by sisters Rosemary Karaus and Ruth Kern and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Dorothy Macke, Frances Brown, Sister Elizabeth Brown, SC, and brothers Philip, Hugh, William, Richard, Thomas and James Brown. Sisters will greet family and friends of Sister Rose Virginia in the Heritage Room of the Sisters of Charity from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Motherhouse chapel. Burial will be in the Sisters of Charity cemetery. Memorials may be made in Sister Rose Virginia Brown's name to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Retirement Fund, 5900 Delhi Rd., Mount St. Joseph, Ohio 45051.Posted:September 23Cerdena Charles "Charlie" Sylvester Cerdena April 18, 1965 September 23, 2009 8 years... They had celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in July. Her siblings and children arrived in time to comfort her and each other during her final days. She had been a Colorado Springs resident since 1981. Shannon was born on April 5, 1958 to Paul and Gladys Hawley, late of Dubois, Wyoming. She is survived by her husband Tim Rowan, three children from her first marriage, Noemie Piard (Dan Federico), Bryan Piard, Marc Piard (Cohinta), and Noemie's sons Isaiah and Julien Flores; also by her siblings, Cathy Mundy (Loran [Skip]), Mary Kelsoe (Cullen), Fred Hawley (Margaret), Paul Hawley (Debbie), and Laurie Stelljes (David). She was preceded in death by her parents, her eldest sister Polly (William), and Fred's son, Jake. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her husband's children and grandchildren, Karen, Kristin, Heather, and Jeremy Rowan (Heidi); Kassidy Rowan Leonard, and Devyn and Dylan Rowan. During her 25-year career as a District 11 teacher at Wilson Elementary, Shannon worked wonders with hundreds of second and third graders. She was highly respected by her fellow teachers for her unique ability to raise performance scores and other measurements of her students by more than two grade levels during the course of a single school year. She learned Spanish while teaching to improve her effectiveness with Wilson's many ESL students. Her lifelong love of children was revealed before and after her teaching career as well. She worked as an au pair for a family in Lyon, France right after high school, where she became fluent in French. After retiring, she served as a nanny for a local family, where Max and Eva called her their third grandma. Shannon had been a volunteer with the Marian House Soup Kitchen since 1995, where she met Tim. She was a member of the Front Porch Giving Circle and had a leadership role with the Zonta Club of the Pikes Peak Area, receiving the "Zontian of the Year" award twice. Without fanfare, in cooperation with Zonta and El Paso County, she also singlehandedly conceived and founded "Launching Families," a program that trains volunteers to mentor young adults who age out of the foster care system. (http://zontapikespeak.org/launching) That program will survive her and be a part of her legacy every bit as much as her brilliant teaching career. Her final Zonta fundraiser idea is a Trivia Night event that other members will carry on for her on October 20. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Shannon's memory go to www.ZontaPikesPeak.org. A celebration of her life will take place at 11:30am, Saturday, September 23, at The International Club, 2422 Busch Ave., Colorado Springs.
