  • April 24 - REQUEST FOR PUBLIC DOCUMENT REVIEW FOR USAF ACADEMY Recently, the U.S. Air Force completed a Comprehensive Site Evaluation (CSE) Phase I/II at the Former Small Arms Ammunition (SAA) Storage Building and the Abandoned Skeet Range at the United States Air Force Academy (the Academy) The Air Force developed the CSE process to serve as the initial munitions response action of its Military Munitions Response Program. The goal of the CSE is to obtain sufficient data to support Air Force decision-making with regards to effectively managing its munitions response sites, while protecting human health and the environment. USAFA is located within the town of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Academy was constructed between 1955 and 1958 with the Academy mission being to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character who are motivated to lead the USAF in service to our nation. The Academy is one of many military installations throughout the United States that will be reviewed under the Department of Defense's Munitions Response Site Prioritization Protocol (referred to as "the Protocol"). The Protocol is used to assess sites that may have unexploded ordnance, discarded military munitions or munitions constituents, and to assign priorities for any additional investigation or munitions removal that may be required. It assigns a relative priority to each historical training area based on an assessment of the overall conditions at the site. The Protocol is not a risk assessment tool nor is it the sole mechanism used for making response decisions at sites. Generally, a site with a higher priority will be addressed before one with a lower priority; however, other factors, such as mission-driven requirements or community input may influence the Air Force sequencing decisions. You are encouraged to review and comment on the Protocol and sequencing processes used for the Academy. You can get involved by providing comments in writing (via email or regular mail). As members of the local community you provide valuable insight into cultural, environmental, economic, or social factors that should be considered in the decision process. The Air Force uses your input to understand/adjust any potential impacts and ensure a comprehensive decision making process is followed. The evaluation criteria, including types of munitions that may be present, ease of access to the site and number of people living near the site, are available for public review in the Academy CSE Phase I/II Report located in the Pikes Peak Library District - East Library. To request more information or if you have additional information about past activities related to the USAF Academy, please contact: Ms. Sharon Stone, AFCEC/CZO 580 Goodfellow St., Bldg 1324 Peterson AFB, CO 80914 (719)554-5819 sharon.stone@us.af.mil Published in Colorado Springs Gazette April 21, 2015
