City Council: Cañon City voters to decide retail marijuana issue

By Carie Canterbury, Cañon City Daily Record Updated: May 8, 2014 at 11:58 am

The decision on whether or not to allow the sale of retail marijuana in Cañon City will be made by voters in the November election.

During Wednesday's General Government meeting, several local residents on both sides of the issue spoke out in front of a standing-room-only crowd. They addressed marijuana from several standpoints, including financial, moral, legal, health and safety.

The current extended retail pot moratorium placed by the council in March is effective until July 1. City Council members Wednesday contemplated whether or not to deny the retail sale; move forward with an ordinance to regulate it; or extend the moratorium and refer to voters in November. The majority voted for the latter.

About 14 people voiced opposition to the sale of retail marijuana, and about six spoke in favor.

Retail marijuana sales are not allowed in any Fremont County municipality.
