Gazette Premium Content Charter school ready to break ground in northeast Colorado Springs

Rocky Mountain Classical Academy will break ground on a long-awaited school building Friday.

Enrollment has more than tripled since the charter school in Falcon School District 49 opened seven years ago with 348 students in grades K-8.

The school started this academic year with 1,075 students, housed at three sites in Colorado Springs, said Christianna Fogler, chief administrative officer.

After opening in August 2006, the school rented space from a local church. Each day, faculty and staff set up partitions, chairs and desks to teach, then removed them at the end of school.

A K-4 elementary school now is at 1710 Piros Drive, a middle school for fifth- through eighth-graders at 3850 Pony Tracks Drive, and a K-8 home school at 3525 Akers Drive.

The new building will consolidate all grades into one building at 4620 Antelope Ridge Drive, off Barnes Road near Marksheffel Road. The estimated cost is $17.1 million, Fogler said, and will be funded through the sale of corporate bonds. The building is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.

The school emphasizes "character education" by developing student leadership, parent volunteerism and community support, along with authorized partnerships.

"Our founding parents were so committed to realizing a school of excellence, they put up their homes for collateral and thousands of volunteer hours," Fogler said.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at 4620 Antelope Ridge Drive. Original kindergartners who now make up the eighth-grade class will be given shovels, along with D-49 and city officials. The public is invited to attend.
