A massive turkey donation drive last year yielded more than 10,000 turkeys for families in need.
Now, the Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado hopes to repeat that feat.
The nonprofit kicked off its "10,000 Turkey Team" community turkey drive on Thursday, announcing four events and a text messaging program to raise money and food over the next two weeks.
The organization doubled the number of this year's turkey drive events to four, beginning with a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run on Saturday hosted by the Springs Rescue Mission.
Last year, the organization received 5,165 turkeys and purchased an additional 5,668 turkeys from monetary donations - which included a text messaging program that added a $10 donation to the phone bill of anyone who texted "turkey" to 41010.
The same texting program will be offered this year, said spokeswoman Shannon Coker.
Even with the initiatives in place last year, the organization couldn't fill 22 percent of the requests it received for turkeys, Coker said.
"It's really important, obviously, to have a turkey on your table for Thanksgiving, and we certainly want to make sure a lot of families are able to do that," Coker said.
