CANON CITY — Prosecutors have been granted more time to file charges against a man accused of killing a mother and her two young children in Cañon City.
A judge on Wednesday agreed to give prosecutors until March 20 to file charges against Jaacob Vanwinkle.
Fremont County District Attorney Thom LeDoux said they want the investigation to advance further before filing charges. One thing they're still waiting for is preliminary autopsy results. Originally autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday but LeDoux said they're actually taking place Wednesday.
Vanwinkle was told by a judge at his first appearance hearing on Monday he could be facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault.
He's accused of sexually assaulting the woman's teenage daughter, who fled their home Sunday night and alerted a neighbor.
