Cedar Point shuts down after water main break

Associated Press Updated: June 7, 2014 at 6:47 pm

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — Cedar Point was forced to shut down its amusement park and most of its resorts on a pitch-perfect summer day Saturday, as a water main break in the city of Sandusky disrupted the primary water supply.

Park officials planned to keep the park closed until Monday, saying in in a statement that a lack of reliable water posed safety risks. They called employees and told them to stay home until further notice, and assured guests their tickets would be honored on future dates this season.

Water problems could affect the park's water rides, concessions and restrooms.

The park, overlooking Lake Erie between Cleveland and Toledo, announced its closure early Saturday, saying city employees were working to repair the broken water main. Email and phone messages were left with the city seeking information.

By afternoon, the park said its resort properties on the peninsula would also be closed for both Saturday night and Sunday night. Those facilities include Hotel Breakers, Sandcastle Suites and Lighthouse Point. Officials asked guests to call to reschedule their stays.

Castaway Bay Indoor Waterpark Resort and Breakers Express remained open.

According to the website of owner Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., Cedar Point is believed to be the largest seasonal amusement park in the U.S. measured by the number of rides and attractions and the hourly ride capacity.

The weather in Sandusky on Saturday was about 80 degrees and clear.
