A month-long investigation by the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, the Fremont County Combined Investigations Response Team and the Canon City Fire Department resulted in a man's arrest in connection with a series of fires in Canon City and Florence.

Michael Thornal, 27, of Canon City, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson, second-degree arson and second-degree burglary.

According to a statement from the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, Thornal became a person of interest early in the investigation thanks to information provided by a Florence resident.

Thornal was suspected of having been involved in a total of eight fires, including two in Canon City where structures were burned or damaged and two in Florence where trash cans were damaged, said Captain Don Pinover in the release.

Thornal remained in custody at the Fremont County jail on a $18,000 bond, records show.
