More than 20 people have reported receiving scam calls this week from a person claiming to be Sgt. Price from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, a news release says.
The caller warns the victim of a warrant out for their arrest, a civil judgment or a missed court date and ultimately asks for money.
At times, the phone number appears to be a legitimate Sheriff's Office number, and victims have been asked to call 719-582-5311, which leads victims to what appears to be a Sheriff's Office voicemail.
"If someone calls you claiming to be an employee with the Sheriff's Office and is asking for money for any reason, please hang up and call your local law enforcement agency," the release says.
The Sheriff's Office does not call people to tell them they have an active warrant, and never asks for payments to clear up a warrant. The Sheriff's Office does not call to ask for money for any reason.
Anyone with information or who had fallen victim to this scam is asked to contact local law enforcement.
