Police arrested two brothers and their father Thursday in connection with a string of bank robberies in Colorado Springs.
Investigators initially believed they were dealing with a serial robber but now say the eight bank robberies were a family affair.
Braden Wayne Butson, 23, his brother, Nicholas Edward Butson, 20, and their father, Brock Edward Butson, 51, were arrested at the Travel Star Motel, 1703 S. Nevada Ave.
Police said they received several tips after the news media shared "clear photos" of the robber who robbed First Bank, 817 Village Center Drive, about 12:23 p.m. Aug. 29.
"While investigators had promising leads following a tip, they still needed to gather evidence to determine if in fact the information was correct," police said. "Investigators were initially concerned of a discrepancy in the height descriptions provided by different victims. They believed that because of the discrepancy, there were potentially two suspects."
The Robbery Unit set up surveillance at the motel after a detective saw the suspected getaway vehicle parked outside.
"Once they observed the suspect, they confirmed that he appeared to be the same person from their video surveillance," police said. "Continued monitoring of the motel proved there was another suspect who matched the description."
Thursday afternoon, police executed a search warrant at the motel and arrested the brothers and their father, who police believe to be the driver of the getaway vehicle.
All three were arrested on suspicion of multiple counts of robbery, police said.
The men allegedly robbed Academy Bank, 2835 Briargate Blvd. four times and tried to rob it a fifth time. They are also accused of robbing American National Bank, 3755 Briargate Blvd, US Bank, 1125 W. Garden of the Gods Road, and First Bank, 817 Village Center Drive.
