Gumper leads area golfers

At Aurora: As the round slugged forward, Alex Gumper picked up more and more momentum and shot a 38 on the back nine to finish his first day at the 5A state golf championships in 36th place with a first-round score of 6-over-par 78 Monday.

The Palmer senior hit two birdies and three pars on his last nine holes. Leader Spencer Painton of Regis shot a 6-under 66 at Murphy Creek Golf Course.

And while 12 strokes is a bunch, Gumper is only five strokes off making it into the top 10.

"I want to get to top 20 or even top 10," Gumper said after regionals. "I know I can keep up with any player if I bring my game and stay focused."

Elsewhere, Rampart's Ben Tarasiewicz shot 81, Doherty's Anthony Augelli 84 and Pine Creek's Christian Madden 85.
