BOSTON (AP) — The Callahan Tunnel has begun closing for a scheduled 2 ½ month renovation.
The two-lane Boston Harbor tunnel began shutting down Friday night.
An average of 30,000 vehicles flow through the tunnel each day, a route from the city to the East Boston neighborhood and Logan International Airport.
The lengthy closure will undoubtedly push many motorists into the Ted Williams Tunnel or to other alternative routes such as the Tobin Bridge.
Officials are hoping travelers will avail themselves of other options, such as public buses and subways, commuter boats and Logan Express buses from several suburban locations.
The Callahan Tunnel is to reopen March 12.
