A body found in a burning car downtown early Tuesday apparently had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Colorado Springs police said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was found about 1 a.m. in a vacant lot near West Cimarron and Sahwatch streets after firefighters extinguished the blaze in the black Dodge sedan.

A "suspicious device" thought to be an improvised explosive was found in the car, police spokesman Lt. Howard Black said. The police bomb squad tested it.

"At the end of the day, though, it may be found to be unexplosive," Black said. "These are difficult scenes for officers, first responders and people driving by the area ... and if this turns out to be an explosive device, it could have been very dangerous for the first responders."

The police Violent Crimes Section is investigating.
