PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are counting on newly acquired running back LeGarrette Blount to provide a potent one-two punch with starter Le'Veon Bell.
Blount signed with Pittsburgh in the offseason after rushing for 772 yards last season for New England. The 6-foot, 250-pound Blount was even better in the playoffs, piling up 166 yards and four touchdowns in a victory over Indianapolis.
The Steelers have been searching for a physical, powerful option at the goal line since Jerome Bettis retired after the 2005 season. Pittsburgh averaged just 3.5 yards per carry last season and ran for only nine touchdowns. Both ranked in the bottom third of the league.
Blount says he knows that Bell is the starterm but thinks he will bring a unique skill set to the field.
