Black Forest fire forces Boy Scouts to leave camp

Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch has been required to evacuate Wednesday afternoon due to concerns that the Black Forest fire might spread. according to the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management.

The camp, located a few miles northeast of Falcon on North Elbert Road, "is not in any eminent danger," according to its web site.

A press release from the Denver Area Boy Scout Council said due to the size of the ranch and "nearly 1,000 youth and adult leaders on the property for normal summer camp operations," the camp is evacuating as a precautionary measure. It has been on pre-evacuation status.

Scouts are being taken on school buses to the Kiowa fairgrounds, and emergency procedures are being followed. Once at the Kiowa fairgrounds, unit leaders will call all parents of their troop to provide further updates.

The evacuation is expected to take two to four hours, and camp officials ask that parents not call the camp because it wants to keep phone lines open for emergency communication.
