The bicyclist hit by a Colorado Springs police officer traveling on North Academy Boulevard died Friday, Lt. Howard Black announced Monday.
At about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, Sgt. Larry Morgan was driving northbound on Academy in an unmarked police cruiser when he struck 30-year-old Nicholas Watson at the Dublin Boulevard intersection. Morgan was traveling between 37 and 42 mph, police say. He was not in an emergency situation.
Police say Watson was headed eastbound when he attempted to cross the intersection. The southbound traffic light of Academy was red but the northbound light was green. Watson was hit when he tried to cross the northbound lanes.
Morgan immediately assisted Watson following the crash until an ambulance arrived. Watson was taken to a hospital, where he died Friday. Police say Watson is the third bicyclist killed in Colorado Springs this year; there were no bicyclist deaths in 2015 and 2016. Watson's death marks the 30th traffic-related death in 2017. There were 21 traffic-related deaths at this time last year.
