Former Colorado Springs City Councilman Bernie Herpin's entry into the recall effort against Colorado Senate President John Morse gives Repubilcans a candidate for the race but it remains to be seen whether there will be a race.

Herpin, a longtime member of the Pikes Peak Firearms Coalition, still must obtain the signatures of 1,000 registered voters from Senate District 11. Even if he does it may be up to a district judge to decide whether recall advocates followed correct procedures when circulating petitions against Morse, the Democrat who pushed for gun-control laws during the 2013 session of the Colorado Legislature.

A protest filed by Colorado Springs resident Cathy Kleinsmith challenged the signatures submitted by recall advocates, claiming that the recall petitions should all be tossed out because they failed to mention a candidate who would run against Morse. Herpin's announcement comes well after the petitions were turned in and has no connection with the initial recall.

Secretary of State Scott Gessler will rule on the protest and his decision can be appealed to a district court in Denver.
