The Cañon City School District passed a major hurdle Tuesday after the community voted in favor of its bond issue, paving the way to rebuild Washington Elementary School and Cañon City Middle School.
The district also received a strong showing of support for its mill levy, which will generate funds for a one-to-one student technology program, as well as other educational resources. Voters approved the measure by 549 votes, with 4,382 votes in favor and 3,833 opposed.
The bond issue, which also will address major facilities issues within the district's other schools, passed by a razor-thin margin, with 4,129 votes in favor and 4,057 votes against.
The district still has one more obstacle to get past before it can begin construction.
