Katie O'Keefe has been covering high school sports for the Gazette as a freelancer since 2014. She graduated with a degree in journalism in the fall of 2013 from Colorado State University, where she covered the CSU Rams football team as a beat reporter for the Rocky Mountain Collegian, CSU's campus newspaper. Katie interned for the sports department at the Kansas City Star in Kansas City, MO during the summer of 2014 before joining the Gazette.

Chole Welch is the Gazette's 2017 girl's big school basketball player of the year. The 17-year-old junior plays for Mesa Ridge High School and a club team in South Denver, Boulder Rockies, that is very competitive and has won national championships. Carol Lawrence, the Gazette
