AURORA — Authorities in Aurora are releasing inmates after only three days in jail because of a cap on the number of municipal inmates housed at the Adams County jail.

The city jail lacks a medical center and larger kitchen, and city officials say they do not have a way to take care of more inmates until a dispute with Adams County is settled. Adams County is also releasing inmates early because of budget cuts.

The Denver Post reports ( ) the city does not have enough money to build its own facility.

Sheriff Doug Darr imposed the county jail cap in 2012 because of budget problems. Commissioners later rescinded the cap, but the sheriff refused to enforce it.

The county says the cap is needed for the safety of staff and inmates.
