ASPEN — The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office is investigating a 57-year-old Aspen woman's death as a homicide, the first such case in the county in more than a decade.

The Aspen Times reports (http://bit.ly/1jKuXkV ) Nancy Pfister was found dead in her home Wednesday. Sheriff Joe DiSalvo says he does not know how long she had been dead when her body was found, and he declined to say how she was killed. An autopsy was conducted Thursday, but the results haven't been released.

DiSalvo says his office has faced a few difficulties during the investigation. It's the first homicide case in Pitkin County in 12 years — not counting murder-suicides — and investigators are conducting interviews in the courthouse, which is cramped.

Pfister was visiting Australia for most of the month and returned to Aspen on Feb. 22.
