Before winning 83 professional golf tournaments, Hale Irwin was a two-time all-Big 8 defensive back at Colorado.
As a former Buffalo, he was happy to hear that CU and Air Force will resume playing in 2019 after not meeting in football since 1974.
Irwin said he had fond memories of his three matchups with the Falcons, which CU won 28-23 in Boulder in 1964, 19-6 at Air Force in 1965 and 10-9 at CU in 1966.
“Ben Martin was the head coach then,” Irwin said. “For a team that always seemed to be physically outmatched, we seemed to always be outwitted. They did things in a military fashion. They dotted the I’s, crossed the T’s; did things the way they were supposed to do them. While we didn’t ever lose to them, we always played great games. I really enjoyed when I went to the academy. We played in Boulder twice and went down to the academy my junior year. Going down there was a real experience. You see the cadets and the flyovers … it was really interesting. I’m glad to hear that. That’s terrific.”
Air Force will travel to Colorado in 2019, with the Buffaloes scheduled to make the return trip to Falcon Stadium in 2022.
