Artists invited to memorialize Waldo Canyon fire

The artwork needs to capture so much.

There was the wall of fire on June 26, 2012, and the images of 347 homes burning in west Colorado Springs. And there was the husband and wife who didn't make it out in time.

Finally, there came the rebuilding process.

In a bid to further recover from the Waldo Canyon fire, a Colorado Springs nonprofit has announced a nationwide call for artists to memorialize the blaze's effect on the Mountain Shadows neighborhood.

Artists have until Oct. 20 to submit their names and r?um? to Colorado Springs Together, which is spearheading the project. Three to five finalists will be selected to pitch their ideas to the nonprofit.

Those finalists will be given a stipend to complete their submissions, said Nora Gledich, chairwoman of the memorial committee.

The project is expected to cost $30,000 to $40,000, and it will be funded through the sale of artwork featured in the "Ashes to Art" project - an initiative by artist Steve Weed, who used the ash from the neighborhood to create artwork. The art sale will take place Tuesday.

The memorial that arises is expected to encapsulate the fire and the recovery process - all the while memorializing Bill and Barbara Everett, who died in the fire.

Beyond that, Gledich is hesitant to offer ideas; she wants to place as few limitations as possible on prospective artists.

"We're not just making that memorial for all of us who live in Mountain Shadows currently," Gledich said. "We're making it for the future as well."
