Air Force and Florida State have canceled their home-and-home football series for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
According to academy sports information director Troy Garnhart, Air Force wanted to keep the 2012 game at Florida State but replace the 2011 home game – which was to be the Falcons’ opener Sept. 3. Air Force coach Troy Calhoun likes playing a squad from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) in the team’s home opener on parents’ weekend.
But Garnhart said Florida State could not make that work and instead suggested dropping the entire series. Air Force agreed to that proposal.
“We’re going to get a chance to play 12 games,” said Calhoun, who sidestepped questions about the scheduling switch. “The good part is we still get a chance to go to the south to play in 2011 – we’re going to play Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. And there’s no shortage of challenges playing in this league (the Mountain West Conference) either.”
Air Force likely will schedule a FCS team for the 2011 opener. Air Force has played a team from the lower-tier conference in each of its three season openers under Calhoun and will play another – Northwestern State – in the 2010 opener.
With the Florida State games gone, Air Force is looking to fill two schedule slots in 2012 and one in 2011.
Air Force wrapped up spring practice Tuesday. Four offensive linemen emerged as probable starters heading into the fall – freshman left tackle Jason Kons, sophomore center Michael Hester, sophomore right guard A.J. Wallerstein and junior right tackle Chase Darden. … The Falcons still have question marks at the injury-riddled inside linebacker spot.
