"Miss Kittly" lost her home after a divorce, and lingering physical problems from an illness prevent her from working.
Her immediate goal is to get Social Security disability and move out of the camps. For now, she spends most of her time at the camp, where she reads a lot and listens to the radio.
“A lot of good people come here,” she said. “For the most part, everyone around here will give you the shirt off their backs."
She once stayed at the shelter, but didn’t like the other women there, and has learned to adapt and even enjoy the camp. She says she has less stress, and her blood pressure has dropped because she doesn’t have to worry about having enough money for food and rent.
