Junior forward Derek Brooks made his first appearance in more than a year for Air Force on Saturday night against Northern Arizona.

Brooks tore a tendon in a toe in his left foot last December, which kept him out the rest of the 2008-09 season, and he missed Air Force’s first eight games this season to concentrate on academics. But he was cleared to play shortly before Saturday night’s game and scored four points with two rebounds and a blocked shot in 9 minutes.

“Thought he played very well, considering he hadn’t played,” coach Jeff Reynolds said. “Tried to do a little too much, had a key turnover there, but I thought he was aggressive.”

Injury update
Senior forward Grant Parker (groin) and sophomore center Sammy Schafer (concussion) missed their second and sixth straight games, respectively.

Reynolds said Parker is “day-to-day,” and that Schafer still is suffering from headaches and likely will be out at least until the Mountain West Conference season starts in early January.

Freshman center Taylor Broekhuis played his second straight game after missing four with a lower-leg muscle strain. He had one point, five rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes.

“We’re playing him a little too much,” Reynolds said. “He’s really hobbling on that leg.”

Etc.
Mike McLain grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. … Air Force was outrebounded 33-31. The Falcons are 0-4 when its opponent grabs more rebounds.
