When Mike Roof first arrived at Air Academy in 1982, the school had just lost half of its enrollment to upstart Rampart and was faced with a significant rebuilding effort. Sixteen years later, he sought another challenge and started from scratch as the first athletic director at Pine Creek.

So taking over a Kadets football program without a winning season since 2008 seems par for the course for the 68-year-old who retired from administrative and coaching duties in 2005.

“I feel like I’ve been through this before,” Roof said from his home Monday night. “I felt like I could be a good fit for Air Academy. Even though I’ve retired from everything else, now I can just coach.”

Roof succeeds Mike Hillstrom, who announced his retirement from coaching after eight seasons following a 2-8 mark in 2012. Roof served as Hillstrom’s assistant the past five seasons.

“It’s going to be fun,” Roof said. “It’s been a while since I’ve been a head coach. Hopefully, it’ll be like riding a bicycle.”
