Outlook for the 2012 golf season for teams that responded to a request for information from The Gazette:
Coach: Cheri Rogers (9th season)
Key players:Chadd Vasquez, fr.; Garrett Sanchez, soph.; Grant Overfurf, jr.; Anthony Augelli, soph.
Outlook:Losing four seniors has Doherty in a rebuilding mode. The young players have shown flashes of their talent and Rogers is excited to see how that translates into 18-hole tournaments.
Coach:Jim Jorgensen (14th year)
Key players:Steven Pattee, jr.; Cody Howling, sr.
Outlook:Jorgensen likes that his players are coachable, so he foresees season-long improvement. Pattee is the team’s leader and Howling its top newcomer.
Coach:Stan Woodworth (15th year)
Key players:Tyler Nolan, sr.; Evan Straight, sr.
Outlook: Nolan is sitting second in the league standings after one event, but the season may be more about building a group of underclassmen for Liberty.
Coach: Jason Kohl (16th season)
Returning state qualifier:Colin Prater, sr.
Key players:Alex Gumper, jr.; Justin Cox, jr.
Outlook: With Prater seeking a fourth straight trip to state, Palmer has set goals of winning league and qualifying for state as a team.
Coach: Dick Castle (15th year)
Key players:Garrett Frye, sr.; Arden Bevere, sr.; Brent Whiting, fr.
Outlook:Frye and Bevere both averaged in the mid-70s last year and missed qualifying for state by one stroke. Add Whiting, an accomplished junior player, into the mix and Pine Creek should be considered the favorite again in the league.
Coach:Scott Blatnick (6th season)
Key players:Andrew Martinez, soph.; Ben Tarasiewicz, jr.; Kyle Shiller, jr.
Outlook:“We are going to work hard every day to get better and hope to have a good showing at every tournament that we enter,” Blatnick said
Coach: Blake Miller (2nd season)
Key players:Kyle Kleckner, jr., Isaac Petersilie, fr.; Austin Burgess, fr.; Wes Moran, fr.
Outlook: Bolstered by a strong freshman class, Coronado looks like the league favorite and has hopes for qualifying for state as a team.
Coach:James Huerena (4th season)
Key players:Braden Bentley, fr.; Caelen Norrington, jr.
Outlook:Huerena says he has a “young team seeking improvement.”
Coach: Todd B. Laxson (1st season)
Key players:Jacob Bair (Mitchell), Dan Vien and Fletcher Smith (Wasson)
Outlook:The ultimate team of rivals, as Wasson and Mitchell are generally bitter opponents but in this case will team together. Laxson likes the cohesion and enthusiasm he's seen thus far and has three returning players to lean on despite just one senior on the team.
Coaches:Chris Morrell and Jim Mason
Returning state qualifier:Matt Tim, sr.
Key players:Nate Starke, soph.
Outlook: Tim is two-time state qualifier and leads a team that could give Coronado a run in the 4A Metro. If nothing else, Tim could be in the running for an individual league title and a third trip to state.
4A PIKES PEAK
Coach: Wayne Marshall (43 years)
Returning state qualifier:Matt Vogeney, sr.
Key players:John Benson, sr.; Blake Becco, soph.; Lucas Rockwell, jr.; Cody Stiegerwald, soph.; Ty Hecht, jr.; Alec Brunk, sr.
Outlook: After losing several strong players, Marshall says the goal is to finish in the league’s top third.
Coach:Bill Paulson (33rd season)
Returning state qualifier:Cole Anderson, soph.
Key players:Wilson Belk, soph.; Daniel Belk, sr.; Patrick Shin, jr.; Turner Estes, jr.; Alex Freinmuth, jr.
Outlook: After winning the league by 112 shots last season, Cheyenne Mountain should again carry the deepest team in the area.
Coach:Michael Grebenik (1st season)
Key players:Jacob Trujillo, jr; Jason Siegel, jr.; Bobby Hampton, fr.; Grant Bettis, fr.
Outlook:A roster without seniors poses a challenge for Grebenik – the pastor at Rockrimmon Church – in his first season, but Trujillo and Siegel could be in the mix at regionals and Grebenik believes the team “will do well and make a mark in our new Pikes Peak Athletic Conference.”
Coach: Greg Morris (5th year)
Key players:Alec Morefield, sr.; Jared Wolf, sr.; Ronnie Folks, sr.
Outlook:Morris has seen improvement in his seniors and is excited about a large sophomore class that will provide depth.
Coach:Paul Gagnon (4th year)
Returning state qualifier:Cale Brandt, sr.
Key players:Kyle Jenson, Tony Edwards
Outlook:Everything changed for this team when state qualifier and team captain Luke Hiser lost both feet in a train accident last week. The team should continue to be strong after qualifying for state each of the past two seasons, but Hiser’s absence will be felt on and off the course. Six sophomores provide depth for the squad.
Coach: Chris Stevens (1st year)
Returning state qualifier:Dylan Hall, soph.
Other key players:Brandon Klemeneic, soph.; Dean Hall, jr.; Matt Mason, jr.
Outlook: Hall finished in the top 10 in the now-defunct 16-team 4A Metro last season as a freshman, then posted a round of 78 at state. The team’s goal is to send Hall back to state with at least one teammate.
3A BLACK FOREST
Coach:John Krause (6th year)
Returning state qualifier:Michael Raab, sr.
Key players:David Cagle, jr.
Outlook:Just four players are on the team, but Raab was a top 25 finisher at 3A state last year and Cagle is a contender to join him at state this year; so a team berth to state is not out of the question.
Coach: Mark Dillon (33 years)
Returning state qualifier:Trevor Schott, sr.
Key players:Christopher Peel, jr.; Adam Newell, jr.
Outlook:Schott’s state appearance may give the program momentum, particularly as Peel and Newell are also back with varsity experience and sophomore Matt Presti and freshman Duke MacMillan are set to battle for positions.
Coach:Brad Keating (6th year)
Key players:Elijah Keeting, sr.; Michael Polkow, sr.; David Walters, soph.
Outlook:CSCS is seeking two to three state qualifiers and has solid depth with seven returning players.
Coach: Mike Nolan (12th year)
Returning state qualifiers:Christian Monett, sr.; Jacob Patch, sr.; Caleb Cole, jr.
Key players:Thomas Mullett, sr.; Jacob Hoffarth, jr.
Outlook: With three returners back, Florence could improve upon its 12th-place finish at state from 2011.
Coach:Ken Vecchio (9th year)
Returning state qualifiers:Lucas Lichina, sr.; Trevor Hunt, jr.; Drew Mendoza, soph.
Outlook: With three players back from the team that was 11thlast year at state, Vecchio is gunning for at least the top third of the Tri-Peaks League.
Coach:Mike Maiurro (1st season)
Key players:Colton Calandrella, sr.; Jimmy Velten, fr.; Adam Brames, soph.; Sean Prinsen, jr.; Ben Cloud, sr.; Jakob Bucher, soph.
Outlook:Though his group is inexperienced, Maiurro is hoping for a late run that could produce a 3A state qualifier.
Coach:Bob Gravelle (2nd year)
Key players:Tim Franklin, sr.; Tanner Swierc, soph.; Noah Shin, fr.
Outlook:With only one returning letterman and half of the 12 on the team in the freshmen and sophomore classes, Gravelle sees a bright future even if it doesn’t all come together this season.
